$2500 WORTH OF CASH PRIZES FOR STUDENT WASTE-ART COMPETITION

REGISTRATIONS FOR 2024

FREE to enter and open to school students and holiday organisations around Australia to repurpose rubbish into prize-winning artworks.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 are invited to participate in the 2024 ‘Litterarty’ Waste-Art Competition for the chance to win cash and other prizes including the opportunity to have work on display at the annual Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival!

Works must be constructed from collected rubbish that has been repurposed into an art medium of the students choosing, including sculpture, 2D, assemblage, mixed media, and collage.

Selected entries will be invited to display their works at an exhibition hosted by the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival at the Bondi Pavilion from the 20th – 24th March 2024, where a panel of ocean devoted judges will determine the winners.

Two Valerie Taylor Prizes, each entailing $750 worth of prize money, funded by Blue World, will be awarded to the primary and secondary school winners elected by the judges. Runner-up prizes of $250 will be awarded to both the primary and secondary categories. A People’s Choice Award of $500 will be awarded to the artwork favoured by fellow ocean lovers at the Volvo Ocean Lovers Festival. In addition, the Australian National Maritime Museum will exhibit the works of the overall primary, secondary and people’s choice winners following the festival!

PRIMARY WINNER

Our Lady Goddess of the Sea

Ashfield Public School

K-6 Art Club

“Water is a building block of all living creatures and for our sentient, breathing planet. We are the ocean, and the ocean is us, intrinsically tied together and connected like family. Without a voice and language like our own we need to listen and care for our world and our oceans as it cries for help and love.”

PRIMARY RUNNER UP

Harbour

Sacred Heart Primary Mosman

Years K-6

“Treasure the sea, keep it totally waste free. Tiles destined for trash were collected from a variety of stores and builders. Students and teachers washed, smashed sorted and glued the tile pieces onto 1.5m by 3m of board to create a mosaic of our harbour. Every student from kindy to 6 had an opportunity to add tiles over 2 days."

SECONDARY WINNER

Could Mermaids Exist?

Santa Sabina College

Ella Hodge

“My work 'Could Mermaids Exist?' highlights the imaginative and magical nature of the ocean ecosystem but also reveals that life beyond the surface is not only a theory but a harsh reality of the effects of negative human action”

SECONDARY RUNNER UP &

PEOPLES CHOICE WINNER

Plastic or Prey?

Reddam House

Jasper Hartmann

“I was keen to create a sculpture that embodies the viciousness of ocean pollution. Micro plastics seem so small and insignificantly but in reality, they are the ultimate predator. We love our power but take for granted the oceans fragility."
