Through games, discussions, and real-world experiments, students explore:
-
How ocean acidification impacts coral reefs
-
The role of heat and salt in driving ocean currents
-
How pressure changes underwater affect marine life and scuba divers
-
Why light fades as you go deeper - and what that means for deep-sea creatures
-
How whales and dolphins use echolocation to find food
-
The latest technologies helping scientists protect our oceans
Priority Access to Sea Science Excursion:
Schools gain priority access to the annual Sea Science excursion held each March at Bondi Beach, offering hands-on ocean experiences.

Why we teach what we teach
Igniting passion, inspiring hope
The Ocean Smart Schools Program aims to ignite a passion for ocean conservation and inspire hope in young minds. We believe every student has the power to make a difference in protecting our planet. By bringing the wonders of marine ecosystems into your school, we equip the next generation of ocean guardians with the knowledge and motivation to understand the importance of ocean health and take meaningful action.
Our mission is to empower students with the knowledge and tools to build a sustainable future for our blue planet.
CURRICULUM CONTENT
Comprehensive listing of Australian Curriculum (ACARA) and NSW Science Syllabus content outcomes that the program addresses, ensuring alignment with educational standards.
Australian ACARA Content Outcomes:
-
Living things have basic needs, including food and water (ACSSU002).
-
Living things live in different places where their needs are met (ACSSU211).
-
Living things have life cycles (ACSSU072).
-
Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment (ACSSU043).
-
The way objects move depends on a variety of factors, including their size and shape (ACSSU005).
-
A push or a pull affects how an object moves or changes shape (ACSSU033).
-
Light and sound are produced by a range of sources and can be sensed (ACSSU020).
-
Heat can be produced in many ways and can move from one object to another (ACSSU049).
-
Forces can be exerted by one object on another through direct contact or from a distance (ACSSU076).
-
Light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted (ACSSU080).
-
Changes to materials can be reversible, such as melting, freezing, evaporating; or irreversible, such as burning and rusting (ACSSU095).
-
Solids, liquids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways (ACSSU077)
